How to Brew Iced Pourover Coffee – The Ultimate Guide (2024)

Looking for a refreshing and flavourful way to enjoy your coffee in the warmer months? Iced pourover coffee is the perfect method to brew your favourite specialty coffee while keeping all the rich, aromatic flavours intact. In this guide, we’ll show you exactly how to brew iced pourover coffee and why After Hours Coffee Filter Coffee is the best choice for this method.

Whether you're a beginner or an experienced coffee lover, brewing iced pourover coffee is simple and gives you the ability to craft a clean, flavourful cup that’s perfect for any time of day.

Why Choose Iced Pourover Coffee?

If you love coffee that’s full of flavours but refreshing at the same time, iced pourover coffee is the method to try. Unlike traditional iced coffee that can taste diluted, brewing pourover coffee over ice locks in all the flavours while cooling it down instantly, creating a crisp and aromatic cup.

  • Smooth, bright flavours: Pourover coffee allows the unique notes of the beans to shine, offering a cup that’s clean and crisp.
  • Reduce dilution: Brewing directly over ice prevents your coffee from becoming watered down.

Essential Tools for Brewing Iced Pourover Coffee

To brew the perfect iced pourover coffee, here’s what you’ll need:

  • Freshly roasted filter coffee (we recommend After Hours Coffee Filter Coffee for its quality and freshness)
  • Coffee grinder (for freshly ground beans)
  • Pourover dripper (like a V60 or Kalita)
  • Filter Paper
  • Ice cubes (preferably large for slower melting)
  • Kettle (ideally with a gooseneck spout for precision pouring)
  • Scale (to measure coffee and water for consistency)

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Brew Iced Pourover Coffee

Step 1: Measure Your Coffee and Ice

For an 8oz cup of iced pourover coffee, use 13g of freshly ground coffee (1 or 2g more than usual) You’ll need 100g of ice (about half a cup). Adjust the quantity based on your desired strength.

Step 2: Grind Your Coffee

Grind your After Hours Coffee Filter Coffee to a medium-fine grind (1 or 2 notch finer than usual). Freshly ground coffee gives you the best flavours and aroma, making this step essential.

Step 3: Prepare the Pourover Setup

Place your pourover dripper (V60, Chemex, or similar) on top of your cup or carafe. Insert the coffee filter and rinse it with a small amount of cold water to remove any paper taste.

Step 4: Add Ice

Fill your cup or carafe with 100g of ice cubes. The ice will immediately begin cooling your coffee as it drips through, preserving the flavours without diluting them.

Pro tip: Best if you had left the vessel with ice in a freezer beforehand.

Step 5: Brew the Coffee

Now, it’s time to pour the hot water over the coffee grounds:

  • Bloom: Pour about 50g of hot water (85°C) over the coffee grounds to allow them to bloom. Let it sit for 30 seconds to release CO2, enhancing the flavour extraction.
  • 3 Pour in stages: Slowly pour the rest of the hot water in a circular motion, split covering all the grounds. Pour 30g at 15sec interval afterwards. Repeat 3 times.
  • Total water poured: 140g water, brew time: 2min.

Step 6: Taste and Enjoy

Once your coffee has filtered through, you’ll have a clean, flavourful cup of iced pourover coffee

Pro tip: Transfer the coffee to another drinking frozen vessel with ice cubes for further chilling.

Iced Pourover Coffee Brewing Tips

  • Use freshly ground coffee: Freshness is key! Grinding your coffee just before brewing ensures the best flavor.
  • Use large ice cubes: Large cubes melt slower, preventing your coffee from diluting too quickly.
  • Adjust the coffee-to-water ratio: If you prefer stronger coffee, use slightly more coffee or less water.
  • Experiment with different coffee beans: Try different single-origin coffees for unique flavor profiles in your iced coffee.
