Many years ago, Rwandan and Burundian troops fought against each other in this region. That is how it got the name 'Butegana' which means "place of attack". The Butegana washing station, established in 1972, was the first of its kind in Burundi. Located in Kayanza province at 1,612 meters above sea level, it sources cherries from around 3,700 local farmers, each typically managing about 200 trees on less than half a hectare of land.
This coffee is processed using a special CIMA yeast natural fermentation method. Cherries are handpicked, sorted, and placed in epoxy-coated fermentation tanks where LALCAFÉ CIMA™ yeast is added for controlled fermentation over 12 hours, after which the coffee is dried on raised beds for 10-14 days. This enhances the coffee’s vibrant berry and plum characteristics.
This is a Red Bourbon varietal, a staple in Burundi. This varietal is known for its incredibly sweet, and floral aromatic notes.
